Bottom line: ShortPixel made the smallest file (−86%), while iLoveIMG kept the highest quality score. TinyPNG sits in between. ezgif barely shrinks the file on its default (quality 90), so you need to lower the quality yourself.

We put one JPG into four free online image compressors, signed out, using default settings, then downloaded each result and measured its size and a quality score. All four kept the original dimensions (3000×2000).

Which one to use
- Smallest possible file: ShortPixel. It shrank our file to 14% of the original.
- Balance of size and quality: TinyPNG. Free for up to 20 images at 5 MB each.
- Keep a bit more quality: iLoveIMG. The smallest reduction (−60%) but the highest quality score.
- ezgif: barely changes the file on defaults. Lower the quality to 70–80 or use “Resize to KB”.
How we tested
- Test file: one 3000×2000 JPG, 2,875,221 bytes (2.74 MB). A synthetic image with no personal data (gradient + 6,000 rectangles + noise), generated identically each time by code.
- Settings: each tool’s defaults, signed out, Chrome desktop, 28 Sep 2026.
- Quality (PSNR): a pixel-by-pixel comparison with the original in dB; higher is closer to the original. Scores are low overall because the test image is very noisy. We could not load ezgif’s result in the browser, so it has no score.

Tools left out this time
Kraken.io‘s free web tool has a 1 MB per-file limit and rejected this file. In-browser tools such as Squoosh and CompressJPEG did not finish in our automated test that day; we will add them after re-testing.
